From rugged Twyfelfontein the  journey turns southwest to Namibia’s iconic coastal town of Swakopmund.

Swakopmund

Swakopmund, a coastal town in Namibia, offers a unique blend of German colonial architecture and modern amenities. Visitors can enjoy water sports, desert adventures, and a vibrant arts and culture scene. The city is perfect for those seeking adventure, culture, and relaxation by the sea.

Day 7: Twyfelfontein - Swakopmund

After enjoying breakfast, you’ll check out and start the day’s road trip adventure through the southern reaches of Damaraland to the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Your route passes the small town of Uis, where we recommend stopping at the Cactus + Coffee Cafe for lunch, coffee and cake. Then, continue past the Brandberg mountain to Hentiesbay and further south to Swakopmund. You can visit Cape Cross Lodge and view the large Cape Fur seal colony. This adds a bit of extra distance to the day’s driving, but it is possible to include this detour if you want to see the seals. Arrive in Swakopmund in the afternoon. Check in at The Strand Hotel and enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean. Take a leisurely stroll through this characterful town before choosing a restaurant for dinner. Overnight at Atlantic Garden Boutique Hotel.

Atlantic Garden Boutique Hotel is in the centre of Swakopmund within walking distance from the beach. The modern hotel has a fresh, feel-good atmosphere with a beautiful garden to relax in after an action-packed day.

Day 8: A Day of Adventure on the Namibian Coast

Enjoy an early breakfast before you drive the short distance between Swakopmund and Walvisbay. Check in at the Mola Mola office on the Walvisbay Waterfront. Your day starts with a beautiful cruise in the harbour and ends with a thrilling 4×4 dune driving adventure to Sandwich Harbour.

We start the day with a cruise, during which, you will see an abundance of bird and mammal life, pelicans and seals up close and delight in the sea air and great food with fresh oysters and bubbles. After the Marine Cruise, you disembark onto the Waterfront Jetty. Boarding 4×4 vehicles, the dune adventure to Sandwich Harbour begins. Lunch is served on the boat, and snacks are served in the dunes.
We have coined a phrase for the Marine Dune Day – “EPIC IN A DAY” – that sums up cruising on the Atlantic with seals and dolphins, and then the adventure and beauty of big dune driving and breathtaking scenery, all in one day!
Please note: it is not always possible to reach the actual lagoon at Sandwich Harbour by vehicle because the tide is sometimes too high.

From the vibrant coast the journey heads further south, into the heart of the Namib Sand Sea.

The Namib Sand Sea and Sossusvlei

The Namib Sand Sea, located along the Atlantic coast, is the world’s only coastal desert that features towering dunes, while Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by massive red sand dunes that are among the highest in the world. These awe-inspiring landscapes offer visitors a chance to experience the vastness and beauty of nature, making them a must-see destination for anyone traveling to Namibia.

Day 9: Swakopmund - Sesriem

Today you leave the Atlantic waters and travel deep into the ancient Namib Desert. You’ll drive along gravel roads with dramatic landscapes unfolding around every corner. The rock formations around the Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons are genuinely marvellous. These ephemeral riverbeds were once home to elephants, rhinos and lions. Their petrified footprints are still visible in the clay today – preserved by the shifting sands covering them. The Kuiseb River Valley divides the sandy southern dune area and the vast northern gravel plains. You cross the Tropic of Capricorn before stopping at Solitaire for their famous Apple Pie and to refuel. After the pause at quirky Solitaire, continue to your lodge. Check in and relax while you enjoy a beautiful sundowner before dinner.

Desert Hills Lodge opened its doors in June 2018. The lodge comprises 18 individual luxury huts inspired by the San people’s grass huts of old. Guests can relax around the bar, enjoy the pool and take their meals in the restaurant, overlooking the magnificent expanse of the Namib plains below. A mere 30km from the Naukluft Gate to the wonders of Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and the Sesriem Canyon, Desert Hills Lodge is perfectly positioned to discover the beauty of the Namib Desert.

Deadvlei

Sesriem Canyon

Day 10: A Day in the Sossusvlei Area

This morning is an early start to grab a light breakfast before departing the lodge for the Sesriem gate into the Namib Naukluft Park. This gate opens at sunrise, and you might find a cue of cars waiting to enter the park. Once you’ve completed the entry permit paperwork and paid the entry fees (N$150 per person + N$50 per vehicle – the permit is valid for a day and allows multiple entries), you drive the 60km to the Sossusvlei dunes. This road is all tar except for the last few kilometres of thick sandy tracks. Sossusvlei will be on your right, and the parking and route to Deadvlei will be on your left. It is best to visit Deadvlei before the day gets too hot. If you’re feeling energetic, we recommend the climb up the crest of Big Daddy Dune. The panoramic views over the sand sea are spectacular. If you want to visit the Sesriem Canyon, you’ll find the access road running along the perimeter fence from the Sesriem park gate. Return to your lodge and enjoy the afternoon at leisure or book a guided activity.
*Please remember it is illegal to sit on or climb the ancient trees in Deadvlei. If you see anyone doing this – please remind them that these iconic skeletons are fragile, and we must all help to protect them.
The Sesriem Canyon is about 1 km long and was carved into the sedimentary rock by the Tsauchab River over millions of years. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of the canyon). The canyon widens into an acacia-lined valley, and the water ends in Sossusvlei, where it pools in years of good rain and eventually drains into the ancient sand.

The iconic red dunes of the Namib are found in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Clear blue skies contrast with the giant red dunes, making this one of Africa’s most scenic natural wonders and a photographer’s heaven. This awe-inspiring destination is possibly Namibia’s premier attraction, with its unique dunes rising to almost 400 metres – making them some of the highest in the world. Sossusvlei is a clay soil depression surrounded by dunes, sometimes over 300 meters high. Most of the time, the depression (also called a ‘vlei’) is bone dry, but during good rainy years, when the Tsauchab River carries enough water, it reaches the ‘vlei’ and creates a shallow lake. If you climb them along the ridge from the dunes, you have an almost unreal beautiful view over the dune sea. Dead Vlei is near Sossusvlei. This dry depression holds the ancient skeletons of Camelthorn trees over 600 years old. Here the trees decay very slowly due to the dry climate.

Day 11: Sesriem - Windhoek

Your route takes you back to Solitaire and the up the Spreetshoogte Pass. The viewpoint at the top of the pass gives an incredible view of the Namib Desert landscape. Continue to Windhoek, where you will return your car and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.

With its lush green gardens and lavish designer rooms, Windhoek Luxury Suites offers luxury and tranquility in the heart of the Namibian capital. Barely a stone’s throw away, our three sister restaurants will wow you with a range of mouthwatering dishes and some of the best fine dining in Windhoek.

The last leg of your journey takes you from Namibia’s vibrant capital to the iconic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders and a must-see destination for any traveler visiting Southern Africa. Located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, this massive waterfall spans over a kilometer wide and drops more than 100 meters into the Zambezi River gorge below. Visitors can take in breathtaking views of the falls from various viewpoints and embark on a range of activities, including boat rides, helicopter tours, and bungee jumping. The surrounding national parks also offer opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, and cultural experiences. A visit to Victoria Falls promises to be a truly unforgettable experience that will leave travelers in awe of the power and beauty of nature.

Day 12: Windhoek - Victoria Falls

An early morning airport transfer to check in for your flight to Victoria Falls. In two hours, you land in Victoria Falls and transfer to your beautiful hotel located close to the Victoria Falls National Park entrance. You have enough time to explore and experience all this wonderful area has to offer. Your hotel can assist with bookings for various activities in and around Vic Falls town. Make sure to book dinner at the Boma Dinner & Drum Show on one of your evenings in Vic Falls. At the end of your stay you’ll be transferred back to the airport to check in for your onward flight.
